Listening to the radio extract from 1958, I can straight away tell that there was a racial problem in Britain, and the fact that black and white people battled with each other, no one really won. 

The man speaking talks about an 'invasion' by the black people and about the fights and riots that are breaking out because of the feelings black and white people had of each other. This speaker is representing the black people as if they were causing all the violence when really it was the white people being prejudice against the black people.

The speaker also believes that violence is the only way to solve the 'problem' of black people, this is representing the white people as very strong willed to want to get rid of black people by exterminating them. In 1958 violence between white and black people was very common and this extract only emphasise  the problems that black people faced when wanting to find refuge in a country like this.

Episode 1.

• I learnt that when England went to war in the second world war, England went to countries like Jamaica to find people who were willing to help in the war, and many wanted to help.

• I also learned that when black people came from other counties the white people wasn’t happy about it and there were many protests and fights.

• But they realized what new things that they could bring into Britain and make it a more interesting place

Episode 2

• This is when the war ended and people started to think the west Indians should have gone back home.  

• The windrush took all the people back to England if they wanted to.

• Men would be kicked out of America because of new immigration laws so they went to England.

• Most passengers were young men

Episode 3

•  The Empire Windrush docked at Tilbary harbor Essex June 21^st 1948

• Most had no homes or jobs at first

• Britain was desperate for labour

• Black people amazed Britain.

• White people went to other countries to tell people about the jobs in England.

Episode 4

• When they arrived they were amazed

• The thought it would be better than it was

• Local people didn’t like their music and the people themselves

• People chanted ‘Keep Britain white’

• Britain were racist at first

• White people h ad typical stereotypes

• The black people really wanted to go home

• Britain started to divide into black and whites

• Romance bloomed between white and black people

• Rooms were available but not for black people

• Accommodation was terrible with horrible living conditions

Episode 6

• White people wondered how black people were getting money to get a house, said they were selling dope ect

• Black people were scared of white people and carried around weapons to protect themselves

• Women were called ‘N***r lover’

• White people attack black people and called it black burring 

• Fights and riots happened

Episode 7

• Black homes were targeted for 6 weeks in notting hill

• They smashed window and petrol bombs were thrown

• Mosley supported hitler!

• He was good at hyping up a crowd

• People would be attacked if they apposed him

• There was fighting in the streets

• Police were taking sides

• Black people started to fight back

• ‘Teddy boys’ killed a black man for no reason at all

• White people thought violence had to stop

• They accused mosley for the killing of a black man

• Thousands of people turned up to pay respects

• People started to turn against mosley

• West Indians started to feel better

• Blues were introduced ‘blues party’

• Black people started to put down permanent roots

• Martin Luther king become popular

• Black people weren’t aloud on buses

• But bus company back down because of boycott

• No laws existed in Britain for black people

• A year and a half to introduce a race law

• Malcolm x and Michael x become popular black figures

Episode 11

• Michael x went to prison for 11 months for saying 'if you see a black man with a white women kill him'

• Money started to go missing from the organisation that Michael x managed 

• Michael x went missing 

• He eventually turned up in Trinidad

• He was evetually hanged for two murders of his own followers

• Then Powell come to the front with the slogan ‘If you want a n****r neighbour vote labour’

Episode 12

• Powell made up lies and was sacked

• Tories were split because of immigration

• Black family were scared to go outside after Powell’s speech

• The country was split

Episode 13

• A fire started killing 13 black children

• Resistance to black people was growing

• Young blacks were displaying a different attitude to their parents

• They wouldn’t put up with racism

• Education was un prepared for black people.

• Black students werent tested before being put in a class

• Conflict between black youth and the police was on the rise

• Police raided one restaurant 5 times for nothing

• Police used to beat black kids for nothing

• Would have searches 3 or 4 times a night just because they were black  

• Police had stupid excuses for searches and arrests

• Police believed they were saving the people of crimes they was maybe going to comit  

• Blacks were arrested 50 times more than white people

• Riots happened against police 

• Bob Marley music offered salvation

• Red gold and green became iconic colours

• National Front Demonstraters matched threw Lewisham

• 4000 police officers had stones and bottles thrown at them

• made things worse between blacks, police and the community
